Research Interests

  • Recent research interests on socio-ecology of black and white colobus in Ghana (Colobus vellerosus), a little known colobine. The Boabeng-Fiema sanctuary (BFMS) is a small island of semi-deciduous forest, where Black and white colobus (C. vellerosus) and Campbell's monkeys (Cercopithecus cambelli) are protected from hunting by traditional taboos. We work in collaboration with the BFMS Management Committee and the Ghana Wildlife Division to better document the status of the black and white colobus and it's ecological requirements at this site and in surrounding forest pockets . We also document the social system of these primates. We also initiated research on the Campbell's monkey in 2003.
  • Work with mountain gorillas at the Karisoke Research Centre (Rwanda) has concentrated on the effect of male reproductive competition on male-female relationships. Research and teaching interests include ape social organization, evolutionary biology, socio-ecology, conservation. Publications have appeared in Folia Primatologica; Ethology; American Journal of Primatology; International Journal of Primatology; and Primates.
